AI-Powered Surf Judging System

/Project Overview

We were tasked with formulating a strategy and implementation to develop an AI-powered surf judging system that automates scoring, improves accuracy, and ensures consistency in competitions.

By integrating real-time video analysis, wave height direction, and scoring automation, this system sets new standards for fairness in professional surfing.

Automating Surf Judging with Precision

Surf competitions rely heavily on subjective scoring, making accuracy and consistency a significant challenge. Judges must assess rapidly changing wave heights, surfer manoeuvres, and overall performance—all while fatigue sets in over long event days. The sport needed a solution that could provide real-time analysis, reduce human bias, and create a more standardised judging process.

/Delivering Results

A Game-Changing AI Surf Judging System

We developed an AI-powered scoring system that analyses video feeds in real-time, detecting wave height, surfer positioning, and performance metrics to assist judges in making fairer, more consistent decisions. This ground-breaking technology enhances judging accuracy while allowing for scalable adoption in competitions worldwide.

Our Process to Delivery

Strategic Planning & Research

We worked closely with surf judges and industry professionals to understand the nuances of competitive surfing. This stage involved defining key scoring criteria, analysing video footage from past competitions, and identifying areas where AI could enhance consistency and fairness.

Developing an AI Model for Surf Analysis

Using computer vision, we created a model that detects wave height and tracks surfers’ movements. The system was trained to quantify wave difficulty and performance quality, providing a baseline for accurate scoring.

Refining Accuracy & Optimisation

To ensure reliability, we tested the AI model to account for different lighting conditions, camera angles, and wave dynamics. Adjustments were made to align with judges’ scoring criteria, ensuring AI-assisted scoring remained intuitive and trustworthy.
